Each March 20th the dental community comes together to promote oral health across the globe for all ages. World Oral Health Day was established to bring awareness to the issues surrounding oral health and educate everyone on the effects oral health can have on the rest of the body. At my Sacramento dental office, we want to help celebrate a holiday that supports everything we’re about by sharing some information about the mouth and body connection.
Why is World Oral Health Day Needed?
The unfortunate truth is that around 90% of the world’s population will experience oral health disease (or diseases) at some point in their lives. What’s perhaps even more startling is that most of them can be avoided through proper hygiene, regular checkups, and education. That’s where a celebration like World Oral Health Day comes in. By raising awareness to how many of us suffer from dental problems that could have been avoided, together we can work to decrease dental disease and increase both oral health and whole-body health.
Healthy Mouth. Healthy Body.
That just so happens that this year’s World Oral Health Day theme. Just like the governing body of this important holiday, we want all of our patients to know just how much your oral health can affect your overall wellbeing. For example, there’s been research supporting a link between gum disease and heart attacks, respiratory issues, and even some cancers. What’s more, several whole-body issues show signs in your mouth first, which makes seeing your Sacramento dentist regularly pretty important.
Notice Anything?
Some common signs that there’s a problem include:
- Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
- Persistent bad breath
- Loose teeth
If you notice any of these signs, call your dentist as soon as possible as it may be a sign of something serious.
